Autonomy Virage won the contract for the Italian Government “Sorpassomerto” project, a system developed with a strategic partner, which uses the Intelligent Scene Analysis System (iSAS) to monitor, detect and penalize lane violations and illegal overtaking on Italian motorways. Autonomy Virage’s neural networking techniques, pioneered by the recognized world leaders in recognition systems, combined with advanced pattern-matching technology allows the system to form an understanding of what happens in the video stream. This allows iSAS to be applied in scenarios where the recognition of dynamic events is crucial.
Autonomy Virage’s technology brings intelligence to the camera by recognizing patterns of activity outside the norm, and can therefore identify erratic driving, dangerous overtaking, speeding and accidents all through one platform solution. The system automatically identifies any infringements, records images of the offence and transmits them back to the control centre. The police computer system then uses the number plate details to identify the driver and issue a ticket and fine notification to the offending driver instantaneously. Under Italian law if charges for a traffic offence are based on CCTV footage, the paperwork has to be generated on the same day.
Autonomy Virage was also commissioned to deploy iSAS across service areas along the Southern Italian motorway. These will monitor strategic areas to detect and deter dangerous or illegal parking, suspicious behaviour associated with car theft, monitor the length of time cars have been parked for, as well as monitoring for abnormal behaviour such as running crowds, which suggest an emergency has occurred. Real-time analysis and alerting translate directly to expedited response so that the necessary response can be taken.
Since the deployment of the Sorpassometro, road traffic accidents have decreased by over 70%
